Minutes of the Meeting of October 24, 2012

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:01 PM by President Chapman followed by the flag salute and the reading of the meeting purpose. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as posted on the web site.

M/S/C to seat the new delegates who were present. Rebekah Hewitt, Aaron Bailey and Mark Riker were sworn in as delegates.

 

SECRETARY TREASURER/STATE OFFICER/STAFF REPRORT

 

Sec. Treas. Sells reported on the large turn-out for Labor/Neighbor on Saturday and specifically thanked the Laborers 292, Doug Scott and Dan Christofferson, for having the largest number of members present. He thanked Michele Stelovich for her superior organizing abilities. Steve Garey, WSLC Labor/Neighbor, reported that 128 people were at the event. Darrel McLaughlin, IBEW 191, noted there would be phoning on November 1st, 4th and 6th to get out the vote.

            Sec. Treas. Sells noted that the next meeting would be December 12th which was different that the usual 4th Wednesday of the month meeting due to the holidays. Nominations for the following 2 year terms will be open at the next meeting: Secretary-Treasurer, Vice President, Sgt At Arms, Trustee 2 and Trustee 6. He also read the WSLC committee openings available and invited delegates to let him know if they were interested in being involved.

 

REPORTS OF UNIONS

 

Organizing Reports—None

 

Contract Negotiations—SPEEA, Rebekah Hewitt gave an update on SPEEA negotiations with Boeing. Progress is being made after the overwhelming membership rejection of the original proposal. WFSE 948, Randy Kurtz reported that members had voted to accept the new contract with the state. Now it is up to the legislature. He noted it remains to be seen where cuts will be made and he expressed concerns over health care costs. SMIU66, Mark Riker expressed concern over issues at Northshore Sheet Metal involving other unions. He felt that the company is trying to get out of its contract with them. He asked for other labor union support while a decertification petition was filed. ATU 1576, Patty Ceis reported that the local would be holding a rally in Lynnwood on Friday, October 26th at 1:30 PM with Representative Larsen concerning Federal and State funding for transit. Congress has attempted to slash funding for public transportation. The media event will be at the Lynnwood Transit Center.

 

Other Local Activities—IAM 751A, Scott Seeley reported on attending his first Grand Lodge Convention. SPEEA, Rebekah Hewitt reported that there will be a rally regarding the Trans-Pacific Trade Pact in Blaine on December 1st.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

Patty Ceis, ATU 1576, reported on activities for the Labor United Way Committee. They are currently working on collecting Toys for Tots. Ron Harrell, IAM 160, is on the Snohomish Human Rights Commission. They will be celebrating Human Rights Day at the Courthouse on December 10th. He invited delegates to participate. Steve Garey, United Steelworkers, reported on support for the United Way Drive in Anacortes. Darrell Chapman, IBEW 191, reported that he would like to be reappointed to the Workforce Development Council in Snohomish County. He spoke on his concerns about the loss of transit routes due to budget cuts, and how the decisions to cut in specific areas were made.
