Minutes of the Meeting of October 27, 2004

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Chapman followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as typed and handed out.

M/S/C to seat the new delegates who were present. Robert Ellsworth, IBEW 191 was sworn in.

EXECUTIVE BOARD and STAFF REPORT

 

            Secretary-Treasurer Sells reported that the Board had met and considered some marketing ideas from the Everett Silvertips. He also reported on his monthly activities regarding NASCAR, Paine Field, Everett Housing Authority, Martin Luther King Commemmoration event, and Puget Sound Labor Agency.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Community Services—Pat Connelly, ATU 1576 reported on the Holidary Food Drive. The delegates were asked to bring non-perishable food items to the next two SCLC meetings. Operation Shortfall Holiday Raffle tickets will be printed soon. Prize donations are needed. He also reported on a request from a single mother living in an uninsulated home who needs firewood. If anyone can help please contact Suzanne Moreau at (425) 252-1112.

 

Organizing-Paul Quaintance, UFCW 1105 noted that the committee meetings would resume next month.

 

COPE

 

            Chris Glenn, Labor/Neighbor Coordinator solicited help for the GOTV efforts.

Secretary-Treasurer Sells reported on the ‘Rally on the Rails’ being held November 1st at the Everett Station at 1 PM. This will feature Senator Patty Murray, Gubernatorial candidate Christine Gregoire and Congressman Rick Larsen.

Also, noted was the November 3rd ‘Meet the Winners’ event at the King County Labor Council that will raise funds for the Puget Sound Labor Agency.

REPORTS OF UNIONS

 

Organizing Reports-Leonard Kelley, IBT 38, talked about truck driver salting possibilities. He also stated that one of the local’s main supporters at Diebold had been fired, and the company raised everyone’s pay $3.00 an hour, claiming that they had it in the works since last January. Diebold is the company that has a CEO who claims he will deliver Ohio to George Bush. They make voting machines.

            Paul Quaintance, UFCW 1105, reported on the opening of new Central Market in the Mill Creek area. They are union, as they agreed to a card check election.

GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

            Bill Mirand, IBEW 46 reported on the West Coast Leadership Institute being held in Seattle in January and April. His union, along with the State Labor Council, are sponsors. The George Meany Institute has been hired to help with the customized training.

            Jim Smith, LIUNA 292, reported that the Radio Labor Journal on KSER 90.7 FM had a Jim Hoffa interview this month. You can here it the fourth Monday of each month. They also have Internet streaming at www.kser.org

            Lee Marchisio, Larsen for Congress campaign, solicited help from those unions who may not have members involved in Labor/Neighbor. Poll watching on election day is needed. He passed around a sign up.

            Mike Waske, Murray for Senate campaign discussed the ‘Rally on the Rails’ event for November 1st.
