Minutes of the Meeting of July 28, 2010

 

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Boschok. Toni Bohan, SEIU 925 was appointed to fill the Vice President’s Chair. Don Shove, IAM 751A was appointed to serve as the Sgt. At Arms. Approval of the minutes of the previous meeting were held in abeyance due to a copy machine malfunction. The meeting purpose was read.

 

CREDENTIALS

 

 

M/S/C to set the new delegates who were present. Julie Johnson, AFSCME 948; Paul Gagnon, IAFF 46 and Christopher Reed, IBEW 77 were sworn in.

 

GUESTS

 

  Stephanie Wright, Candidate for appointment to vacant County Council seat in District 3 spoke and give her background as a City Councilwoman in Lynnwood and as a teacher in the Northshore School District where she was active in her union, the Northshore Education Association.

 

  Joan Weiss, CTC Labor Liaison/SEED Program, discussed grants around training for energy efficiency. She will be working with several community colleges, and the Snohomish County Workforce Development to partner on the grant. Her job will be to make sure Labor is active in the partnership.

 

EXECUTIVE BOARD

 

  Secretary-Treasurer Sells noted that Solidarity Night at the Everett AquaSox is August 4th this year. Tickets were available. Labor/Neighbor will commence again this Sunday, August 1st at 1 PM and delegates were encouraged to sign up. He also discussed the anti-union attitude of the Seattle Times editorial board that refused to endorse Luis Moscoso in the 1st Legislative District because he had worked for a union. Delegates were encouraged to send a message to the Times board by showing up at a July 29th fundraiser for Luis.

Other Local Activity -- Brent Sanchez, IAM 751A invited delegates to the August 14th 10 AM to 3 PM Car Show at the Everett Machinists Hall on Airport Way. Proceeds will go to benefit Guide Dogs of America.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

  It was M/S/C to support Stephanie Wright for appointment to fill the Snohomish County Council, District 3 vacancy.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

  Mike Warren, Alliance of Retired Americans invited delegates to a state convention to celebrate Social Security and Medicare and help build local retiree groups. It will be September 29th at the 751 Hall in Seattle.
  Suzanne Moreau, Puget Sound Labor Agency, thanked John Lovick for his work on the evening’s Turkey Fry to help raise funds for the PSLA. A little over $2,400 were raised. Also thanked were Jackie Boschok, Toni Bohan and Bob James for their help in putting the event on. She asked for volunteers to help with the PSLA raffle at the Solidarity Night game. Delegates were invited to the September 8th United Way, Spirit of Snohomish County event, as well as a number of other events coming up in September and October.

  Jim Smith, promoted the KSER Radio Labor Journal, and noted he would be taping the Washington State Labor Council Convention for the program.

  Lillian Kauffer, Candidate for the 44th District Senate seat, thanked the Council and read a letter of thanks for support for her campaign.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 6:36 PM
