Minutes of the Meeting of October 26, 2005

 

            The meeting was called to order at 6 PM by President Chapman. This was followed by the flag salute and the reading of the opening statement. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as typed and handed out.

GUESTS

 

Rich Austin, retired ILWU member, and National Health Care advocate spoke on behalf of HR 676, the Conyers bill to institute a National Health Care plan.

This bill, sponsored by Congressman John Conyers, would establish an American-style national insurance program. The Bill would create a publicly financed, privately delivered health care program that uses the already existing Medicare program by expanding and improving it to al U.S. residents and all residents living in U.S. territories.

Some of the points include:

·        Physicians For a National Health Program reports that under a Medicare for all program total health care savings will be over $286 billion a year

·        Under HR 676, a family of three making $40,000 per year would spend approximately $1600 per year for health care coverage.

·        Under HR 676 employers contribution will be reduced from $2600 (2005 costs) to $1155 per year; less than $100 per month.

            Delegates acted upon the following recommendations from the Executive Board.

M/S/C that Seth Fine is well qualified to serve as Appellate Court Judge in Snohomish County

M/S/C to endorse Gail Rauch for Snohomish County Charter Review, District 1

M/S/C to endorse Troy Elmore for Fire Commissioner, District 8

M/S/C to support Dave Kurtz for an appointment to any possible upcoming Superior Court Judge openings

           

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Organizing

Leonard Kelley, IBT 38 gave an update on activities with regards to Wal Mart. He noted that the Sheet Metal Workers had sent a $1,000 to help with legal actions. He reported that on October 27th there would be a Marysville Public Hearing at 6 PM and that attendance from other locals was needed for that. On November 15th, the Arlington Smokey Point group will be doing a “Shop Local” event.

Toni Bohan, SEIU 925 reported that ballots will go out on October 31st for the state’s child care workers. They will have two weeks to get it in. Some of them make as a little as $2.00 an hour per child.

 

 

Contract Negotiations

            Steve Oss, ATU 883 reported they would be entering into negotiations with Everett City Transit on November 10th. They are concerned about health care takeaways that other bargaining units have faced.

            Bob Rommel, SPEEA 2001 noted negotiations with Boeing for a new contract will be held this next week at Sea Tac. They are hopeful that it will be tied up quickly. Pay issues are of a great concern.

 

Puget Sound Labor Agency

            Suzanne Moreau, Snohomish County Director of the PSLA reported on the upcoming Meet the Winners fundraiser for the PSLA in Seattle on November 9th, 5 PM to 7 PM. Suggested donation is $15.00. She also related the recent statistics on the increase in poverty in the county, and talked about United Way’s campaign. December 14th will be the annual Holiday Party fundraiser locally.

 

NEW BUSINESS

           

M/S/C to endorse HR 676, the National Health Care Act.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

           

Steve Oss, ATU 883 discussed their upcoming toy and food drive which will help the VOA this year. It will be sometime in November.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            Bob Rommel, SPEEA 2001, asked for an update on upcoming meetings. Sec. Treas. Sells noted that because of the holidays meetings are moved up a week in November and December. We are planning some events for those meetings. He encouraged delegates to check the web site for meeting information.

            Allyn Triezenberg, Admin. Asst. encouraged the delegates to send information they would like posted on the web site concerning their locals’ activities.

            Darrell Chapman, IBEW 191, reported on homes being built with Federal dollars and sweat equity.
