Minutes of the Meeting of May 28, 2014

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Redrup. The flag salute and reading of the meeting purpose followed. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as posted.

Remy Stephanson Leonard, Candidate for Snohomish County District Court Judge, Everett Division, Pos. 1 spoke about her educational background which included a law degree preceded by a degree in political science. Her job experience included serving as a judge pro tem and teaching at both Everett Community College and Trinity Lutheran.

 

Anthony Howard, Candidate for Snohomish County District Court Judge, Everett Division, Pos. 1 spoke to his personal history and experience in private practice as an attorney. He has been a public defender in Snohomish County and presided over hundreds of cases as a court commissioner. He noted that he was the Ògo toÓ person for search warrants in the county.

 

David Ericson, Snohomish County Fire District 1-911 Memorial, spoke on a 911 memorial being planned in north Snohomish County. It will contain a piece from ground zero that weighs 2,080 lbs. Currently, they are doing well in fundraising, but are seeking expertise from trades to help with the construction.

 

Ross Rieder and Ron McGaha presented information and artifacts on the Everett Massacre in preparation for a centennial event in 2016. David Dilgard from the Everett Public Library gave some background on artists who did posters after the event.

 

A 5 minute break followed by delegates to speak with guests.

 


SECRETARY-TREASURER/STATE OFFICER/STAFF REPORT


Leonard Kelley, IBT 38, Membership Education Chair gave an update on the committee looking at a project for community outreach to educate about unions and possible organizing potential. They are working on finalizing details. He also noted that sign-ups for Working America would be part of it. He passed out surveys for the Labor Education Center, and asked delegates to fill them out.

 

REPORTS OF UNIONS

 

Organizing—No new reports

 

Contract Negotiations—IBEW 89, Teresa Johnson reported that the latest Frontier offer was turned down by an 81% vote. They are back at the table. IBT 117, Michael Boe gave an update on Department of Corrections negotiations. IBEW 191, Darrel McLaughlin said that negotiations with Communications contractors was going better. IBT 38, Steve Chandler updated the delegates on the UPS contract which will have retroactivity, a 70 cent raise. Part timers will get better health care.

 

Other Local Activity—IBEW 89, Teresa Johnson reported that Ray Egelhoff will not be returning to the local. Matt Carroll has been appointed as the local business manager. She noted that she has been elected President of the local. IBEW 191, Darrel McLaughlin reported that ballots for the local election in the mail. He expected the results would bring some changes in the make-up of the Board of the local.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

Sec. Treas. Sells reported on the COPE Screening Committee recommendations for local candidates. As a result the following motions were passed:

 

M/S/C to endorse Ty Trenary for Snohomish County Sheriff

M/S/C to rate Kristen Olbrecht well qualified for Snohomish County District Court, Cascade Division, Pos. 1 Judge

M/S/C to rate Remy Stephanson Leonard well qualified for Snohomish County District Court, Everett Division, Pos. 1 Judge

M/S/C to rate Anthony Howard well qualified for Snohomish County District Court, Everett Division, Pos. 1 Judge

 

Nominations to fill unexpired Board terms for Sgt At Arms and Trustee 5 were opened. The following nominations were made:

GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

Ann Seabott, Wash Tech—United Way Labor Committee reported on upcoming United Way focus groups looking at the issue of what kind of community we would like to live in. She gave an update on the Peanut Butter Drive for the food banks being led by the Labor Committee. They would be having a press event at the Snohomish County campus on Thursday, May 29th at noon to hand over the peanut butter to the V.O.A. They have collected about 1,500 lbs of peanut butter for the food banks. Michael Boe, IBT 117, reported that the Senator Murray Golden Tennis Shoes event was tomorrow for those wishing to attend. Lester Mullin, IAM 751A, noted that the 3rd Annual Car Show will be held August 16th. This helps raise funds for Guide Dogs of America. He also mentioned the on-going local Town Halls being held for members. Jim Smith, LIUNA 292 asked delegates to write down information on the Radio Labor Journal which is the 3rd Monday of the month on KSER, 90.7 FM. He indicated he is open to involvement of others and could use some help with the program. Leonard Kelley, Jacklyn Rae and Allyn Triezenberg were thanked for the set up this evening and the food preparation.
