Minutes of the Meeting of November 17, 2004

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Chapman followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as typed and handed out.

A moment of silence was observed for WSLC Vice President, Joe Murphy who disappeared in a plane accident in Alaska; Steve Whipple, former UFCW 1105 Secretary-Treasurer and Liz McLauglin, former County Councilwoman, who lost their battles with cancer. President Darrell Chapman and SPEEA delegate Mark Moshay gave remembrances of Joe Murphy. UFCW 1105 delegate Paul Quaintance spoke about Steve Whipple and Secretary-Treasurer Mike Sells spoke about Liz McLaughlin.

            Richard Berndt, Puget Sound Regional Council Partnership, spoke on the role of the partnership in developing a regional economic plan. The SCLC was invited to become one of the partners.

 

EXECUTIVE BOARD and STAFF REPORT

 

            Secretary-Treasurer Sells reported that the Executive Board met and discussed: the Puget Sound Regional Council request, NASCAR’s Legislative Hearing, the Secretary-Treasurer’s upcoming schedule and SCLC finances.

            Secretary-Treasurer Sells made available his meeting schedule for the time since the October 27th Labor Council which included: Everett Housing Authority, rally on the rails for COPE, Puget Sound Labor Agency, Snohomish County Committee for Improved Transportation, Legislative Meeting on NASCAR and the House Democratic Caucus.   

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Community Services—Chris Glenn, SPEEA, reported that raffle tickets for the Puget Sound Labor Agency Operation Shortfall raffle were available. Locals may obtain booklets to sell by calling Suzanne Moreau at 252-1112. He also noted that Mayor Mike McKinnon of Lynnwood had donated 23 turkeys for those in need during the holidays. The Community Services Committee is looking at doing a Spring Paintball Tournament as a fundraiser. Delegates were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the December meeting for the VOA Food Drive.

 

Organizing- Paul Quaintance, UFCW 1105, reported they would be meeting next in January. He encouraged delegates to watch the MSNBC special on Wal Mart. Don Shove, IAM 751A, asked about union affiliation at the Everett Events Center. HERE 8 has the contract on the concessions and IATSE 15 has the contract with Comcast of stage set up. The maintenance workers are currently non-union.

 

COPE

 

            Delegates acknowledged the efforts of Chris Glenn and Bob James in the local Labor/Neighbor program.

Contract Negotiations-Toni Bohan, SEIU 925 reported on the Marysville School District contract settlement and what a difference the new Board members had made.

            Dwayne Martin, Countrywide Home Loans and member of IAFF 1984 spoke about the availability of home loans for union employees. His company works in partnership with the AFL/CIO Housing Investment Trust.

            Mark Moshay, SPEEA, spoke about the gratifying experiences he has had in working in the RAMP program with Jerry Otis.

            Chris Glenn, SPEEA, thanked the locals for their United Way endorsement letters and noted that the campaign was up this year.

            Jim Smith, LIUNA, reminded delegates about the KSER 90.7 FM Radio Labor Journal program that is the 4th Monday of each month at 4:30 PM. Mike Heins, IBEW 191 and Jason Redrup, IAM 751 are helping him with the program.
